JACK DENNIS FLY FISHING REPORT
May 4, 2008
SNAKE RIVER
It's typical springtime on the Snake. A few warm days and the water gets a bit silty. Cold weather and the river clears again. Since this is difficult to predict, be prepared for anything. The stretch of water just below Jackson Lake Dam is always clear. Nymph and streamer fishing is the best way to go, although you can have some good dry fly fishing on just the right day. . The runoff hasn't started in earnest yet so the water is still fairly clear. Weather will detetmine when the runoff begins and the river gets muddy.HOBACK RIVER
The Hoback River is silty with runoff right now and will likely be that way until the snow has melted in the mountains. If you are wishing to go fishing right now and want to head south, the Green River is still fishable.GROS VENTRE RIVER
The Gros Ventre is somewhat silty but still clear enough to fish. This condition can quickly change any day so it is best to check with the fly shop for up to date instructions.PACIFIC CREEK
Pacific Creek is somewhat silty with runoff. This can change a bit from day to day, but once the snow begins to melt in earnest, the river will be silty until the snow has completely melted. If you head in that direction to fish and find the river is to silty then the best suggestion is to head to the Snake just below Jackson Lake Dam. It is always clear.JACKSON HOLE LAKES
The lakes in Jackson Hole are open for fishing but covered with ice. Since the ice is rotten and may be unsafe, I would check with the Park Service before venturing out.
STAR VALLEY
One of the popular places to fish in the spring is the Salt River just south of Jackson Hole. Right now the Salt has is silty with runoff and not worth bothering with. If we get a spell of cold weather this situation can change for a few days, but all that snow needs to melt before the river becomes and stays clear. For those wishing to try fishing, drifting a black wooly bugger deep will be as productive as any method. good access and is generally easy to fish. Like other rivers in the area it is subject to runoff and the clarity can change.PINEDALE AREA
The Green is open and still fishing fairly well. The runoff on this river is unlike others. It starts later and finishes earlier. Streamers and nymphs are the way to go here.HENRY'S FORK
Like the Snake, much of the Henry's Fork remains open throughout the year. If you are unfamiliar with this area it is wise to get good directions from a local person in Jackson who knows how to get to the fishing areas. Midges and nymphs are usually best in the spring.SOUTH FORK
The South Fork remains open throughout the year. The water level is rising right now so some of the lower stretches are becoming more feasible to float. Nymphs and streamers are the way to go now.YELLOWSTONE PARK
All the fishing is closed in Yellowstone Park until the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend in 2008. Some will open at that time and other places will remain closed.ABOUT US
