Imagine yourself standing in knee-deep water on a gravel bar and casting to one of more than 20 large trout which are consistently sipping the surface in the midst of a prolific Pale Morning Dun hatch. You already landed more than 15 nice cutthroat trout and the day isn’t even half over. Does this sound ideal? It is.

The South Fork is one of the most prolific trout streams in North America. With a population of nearly 7,000 fish per mile, it is no wonder the South Fork has gained the reputation that it has. Both rainbows and cutthroats are common and you can also catch some really nice browns. The average fish on the South Fork is 15 to 17 inches and the 20 inch fish is not uncommon.
Because of its size, the South Fork is perfect for float fishing. In fact, floating is the most realistic way of fishing this large river because many of the structures you fish just can't be reached from the bank. With a guide at the oars, you'll cast against the large cottonwoods that line the banks. In some places you can stop at a gravel bar in the middle of the river and work a riffle. Whether you are a dry fly fisherman or enjoy using stoneflies and/or streamers, these large trout are ready to take your offering.
For our guided trips we recommend bringing waders, rain gear and ample warm clothing. The weather in Valley can be quite variable and some of the best fishing can be found on overcast and cool days. Generally your guide will meet you at our store in downtown Jackson, but other arrangements can be made. All our trips include lunch, transportation, beverages and any loan rods. You’ll just need to get a few flies, leaders and an Idaho fishing license. Cameras are well worth bringing to capture the excitement.
