Salt River Guided Float Fishing Trip

The Salt River is a fairly small river that flows out of the Salt River Range through Star Valley, Wyoming and eventually empties into Palisades Reservoir. It has a good population of cutthroat and brown trout, which average from 12 to 14 inches.

One of the nice things about the Salt is that it is a great place for a beginner to learn to fly fish. The casting is easy and you can usually cast large, easily seen, dry flies, which always makes a fun day of fly fishing. Cutthroat love to take flies on the surface so you will probably spend most of your time fishing dry flies.

Another great thing about the Salt is the chance of catching a good size brown trout. The Salt River has log jams, brush piles and undercut banks that make some great brown trout habitat and has produced many browns over 16 inches. During the month of October, when the browns start to become more aggressive, the chance of catching a larger brown increases.

For all of our guided trips, we recommend bringing waders, rain gear and ample warm clothing. The weather in Star Valley can be quite variable and some of the best fishing can be found on overcast and cool days. Generally your guide will meet you at our store in downtown Jackson, but other arrangements can be made. All our trips include lunch, transportation, beverages, and any loan rods. You’ll just need to get a few flies, leaders and a fishing license. Cameras are well worth bringing to capture your day. This river does have numerous bug hatches, and when hit at the right time can be excellent fishing. However, most of the time streamers are the way to go. All of our fishing trips include lunch, loan rods and waders if needed.
