2. What if it rains or snows on the day my scheduled guide trip?

For better or for worse, some of the best fly fishing occurs when the weather is nasty. That said, we want you to have a good time and will not force you to fish in weather that could be dangerously cold. On the other hand, if we have 10 other guide trips that day and they all go out we would have to take another look at the situation. If you don't go, the fishing guide doesn't get paid. We want to be fair to everyone.

3. Do we need to make advance reservations for our guided fly fishing trip?

There are a few times during the year when you can walk into our booking office and book a trip for the next day. But, generally you need to reserve one of our professional fly fishing guides ahead of time. For the prime fly fishing months of August and September, we will often be booked full at least 2 weeks ahead and sometimes even more than that. The truth and bottom line is that we recommend booking your fly fishing trips as far in advance as possible.

4. Who will my guide be?

Unless you make a specific request, we will not assign your guide until two or three days before your guided fishing trip. Even then, that assignment is subject to change for one reason or another. We do our best to match clients with guides that will provide the experience they are seeking. If you ask for a certain guide, we will schedule you with him unless he has already been requested by someone else before you booked.

5. Will I have the same fishing guide every day?

Not necessarily. Some fishing guides are requested months in advance and they may not be available to fish with you for more than a day. Some customers have told us that they like to fish with different guides each day because they can learn different things from them. If you would like to fish with the same guide for your whole stay please let us know that when you book your trip and we will do our best to accommodate you.

6. Where and when do we meet?

Most of our guide trips meet at 8:00 am. The meeting time and place depends on the time of the year and the trip you're taking. Yellowstone Park trips generally meet earlier, because of the distance of the drive from town. In August, our trips meet at 8:00 a.m., while later in September they meet at 9:00 a.m., because of the cooler temperatures typically found during this time of year. All our guided fly fishing trips are full days and usually return by 7:00 p.m., but you can shorten the day if needed. Be sure to let us know when you book your trip if you need a shorter day and let your guide know the day of the trip so he can choose a stretch of the river that will work for you and your schedule.

7. Can we take three people with one guide?

We have a limited amount of boats that can take 3 people. The price for that service is $100 per day for an extra person. Since three can't fish at once, you will need to switch places throughout the day so that all can fish. On some rivers three person trips are not feasible. Some of our guide vehicles can take 3 persons, but others can't, so you may need to provide your own transportation, to and from the river.

8. What is included in the price of a guide trip?

The guided fishing trip fee includes the guide, loaner fly rods if needed, transportation to and from your meeting place and a great day of fishing. Fishing licenses and terminal tackle (leaders, tippet, flies, split shot, indicators, etc...) are not included. If your trip enters either Grand Teton National Park or Yellowstone National Park the park entrance fee is also included in the price.

9. Where will we fish?

Because of regulations in Grand Teton National Park, fishing trips floating in the park must be decided at the time of the booking if you want to be guaranteed to float in the park. When you arrive on the morning of your guide trip, we will introduce you to your guide. Then, you and your guide can discuss options for the day. By that time, your guide will have had a chance to talk with our other guides and he will have the latest information on what areas are fishing well. We advise you to follow the guides recommendations, but do not hesitate to speak up and let him know what you desire out of the day.

10. What should I do to prepare for my trip?

If you have fly fishing experience, the best thing you can do to prepare for a guide trip is practice your casting. If there isn't much fishing near your house, then go to a local park and cast on the grass. Other than that, it doesn't hurt to do some exercise. Jackson is located at 6200 feet above sea level and if you are coming from sea level, even walking around can be stressful.

11. What do I need to bring for a full day of fly fishing?

In most cases you will want to purchase recommended flies the morning of your trip to match conditions.

Chest waders are a good idea during the summer and a must in the early spring, fall, and winter months. Often during the summer months when the temperatures are warm, light pants or shorts and sandals are fine. Often the summer sun requires that you have a hat, polarized sunglasses, insect repellant, and waterproof sunscreen. Be prepared for varied weather. The weather here changes fast. A sweater, jacket or light down vest, fingerless fleece gloves, as well as a good raincoat should be included as a precaution.

Once you meet your guide will discuss the fishing options available to you and review your equipment at your request. Once you determine the destination and peripherals, your guide will then assisting you in picking out an appropriate selection of flies ideally suited to the water, hatch, and conditions in effect at the time of your trip.

Many of our clients use an average of 12 to 18 flies per day, depending on where they fish. Your guide will also assist you in selecting tackle items such as leaders, tippet and fly floatant necessary to help make your trip a success.
